      <image:title>Blog - Is Your Novel Idea Good Enough? 8 Ways to Find Out - Let's find out if your idea is actually ready.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Or maybe you have too many ideas, and you have no idea which one to commit to. Either way, you're in the right place. I'm Leslie, an Author Accelerator certified book coach. I help fiction writers assess their ideas before they invest serious time into a story that isn't quite there yet. The goal isn't to talk you out of writing, it's to make sure that when you sit down to write, you're building on a foundation that can actually hold a novel. Run your idea through these eight questions and see how it holds up.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Is Your Novel Idea Good Enough? 8 Ways to Find Out - 3. Conflict and stakes: Is there enough tension?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Without conflict, your story has nowhere to go. Every great novel has a core conflict at its center. Examples are a battle between good and evil, a deeply personal internal struggle, or a clash of values. Can you clearly identify yours? Ask yourself: what does your protagonist want, and what is standing in their way? Is the obstacle genuinely difficult? Are things too easy for them? And what does your protagonist stand to lose if they fail? Stakes are what keep readers invested. The higher and more personal the stakes, the more readers will care about the outcome. If your protagonist has nothing real to lose, the tension collapses. Clear conflict plus meaningful stakes is one of the strongest foundations a story can have.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Is Your Novel Idea Good Enough? 8 Ways to Find Out - 7. Feedback: What do other people think?</image:title>
      <image:caption>No writer works in a vacuum, and outside perspective is genuinely valuable at this stage. Share your idea with trusted friends, fellow writers, or beta readers and pay attention to how they respond. Not just whether they say they like it, but what questions they ask, what excites them, and where they seem confused or disengaged. If multiple people point out the same issue or ask the same question, take that into consideration. It's usually a signal that something needs more development. That said, not all feedback carries equal weight. Be discerning. Take what resonates and leave what doesn't. The goal is to gather useful information, not to let other people write your book for you. Constructive feedback at the idea stage is so much easier to act on than feedback after you've written 80,000 words.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Write Characters Who Are Nothing Like You - I'm Leslie, and as a developmental editor and book coach, a big part of my job is making sure that every character in a manuscript feels genuinely distinct.</image:title>
      <image:caption>And the most common thing I see tripping writers up? Writing everyone through the same lens: their own. Which makes total sense, by the way. You know yourself better than anyone. It's the easiest place to pull from. But here's the thing: your story almost certainly needs characters who think, react, speak, and move through the world in ways that are nothing like you. And that's actually one of the most exciting creative challenges in fiction if you know how to approach it. By the end of this post, you'll have a seven-step process for building and writing characters who are genuinely different from you, and with enough depth that readers believe every word.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Write Characters Who Are Nothing Like You - 4. Find the ways you can relate to them</image:title>
      <image:caption>Here's the step that keeps you grounded. Even if your character is drastically different from you on the surface, the emotional core of most people is more similar than we think. Fear, love, ambition, the desire to be seen, the fear of being abandoned, are all human things. Find the place where you and this character overlap emotionally. What do they want? What are they afraid of? What do they care about most? Even if the circumstances around those feelings look nothing like yours, you've felt something like what they're feeling. That common ground is your anchor. It's what keeps you from writing them as a caricature and helps you write them as a person.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62fea1516e7e3070c2537663/1781650586448-1EIR2135PX0YZF45D6YO/unsplash-image-sWlDOWk0Jp8.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - How to Write Characters Who Are Nothing Like You - 6. Live like they do This one is my favorite, and it works even in small doses. I f possible, immerse yourself in your character's world. Does your character knit? Take a knitting class. Are they really into fitness? Hit the gym. Are they an artist? Spend an afternoon drawing. Experiencing even a small slice of how they connect to the world can shift your perspective in ways that research alone won't.</image:title>
      <image:caption>A few specific ideas: For characters with specific jobs: Call someone who actually does that work and ask questions. If you're writing a character who's a police officer, look into ride-alongs. They exist, and they're genuinely fascinating. For characters with hobbies: Documentaries, YouTube rabbit holes, and online communities can get you surprisingly far. For characters with a specific vibe: Build them a playlist. Seriously! Put together the music your character would actually listen to, and play it before you sit down to write their scenes. It sounds small, but it works. It gets you out of your own head and into theirs. The goal is to understand how the character experiences the world.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Edit Your First Draft: A Step-by-Step Guide - Spoiler alert: your first draft is probably a mess.</image:title>
      <image:caption>And that's exactly where you're supposed to be. I know that's not always easy to hear, but I promise it's true. Every writer I've worked with, from the very beginning stages all the way to polished near-final drafts, has been right where you are at some point. The mess is part of it. I'm Leslie, and as both a book coach and developmental editor, I spend a lot of my time living in the second and third drafts with writers. This is a step-by-step process for cleaning up that first draft, in the right order, so you're not wasting time on the wrong things. By the end of this post, you'll have a clear, nine-step roadmap for turning that messy first draft into a solid second draft, with no overwhelm required. Let's dig in.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62fea1516e7e3070c2537663/1781564473775-8IEVVIBYTW3LR9HJYMMR/unsplash-image-UOiNcIb6IWQ.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - How to Edit Your First Draft: A Step-by-Step Guide - Why you always edit big to small</image:title>
      <image:caption>Here's the reason this order is so important: if you focus on grammar or sentence-level stuff before you've sorted out your plot, you’ll waste time. Imagine spending hours perfecting a scene, really nailing the language, the rhythm, the word choices, only to realize later that the whole scene needs to be cut because it doesn't serve the story. That is not a fun moment, and I've watched it happen. Tackle the big structural stuff first. Save the line edits for later. Your future self will thank you.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62fea1516e7e3070c2537663/1781564706472-4TJY8CWEUXAZR7AEUW0Q/unsplash-image-a1t-eB2xHXM.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - How to Edit Your First Draft: A Step-by-Step Guide - Step 5: Check for cause and effect This one is easier with your outline in hand. Go through your chapters and ask: Does what happens in chapter two happen because of what happened in chapter one? Does chapter three follow inevitably from chapter two? Your story needs this chain of cause and effect to feel like a story.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This is also your logic checkpoint. If something dramatic happens to your protagonist and she has an emotional reaction that leads to a specific action, is that action proportional to what happened? Does it make sense for who she is? Story propulsion comes from connection. Check that the connections are actually there.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 10 Overused Phrases in Fiction That Are Killing Your Prose - Okay, it's time to get real with you guys.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I love my job as a developmental editor… but these overused phrases? They make me shake my head every single time I read them. I'm Leslie, and I want to break down the top 10 most worn-out words and phrases I see constantly when editing fiction, and what you can use instead to make your writing feel fresh and original. And before we dive in: finding these in your manuscript doesn't make you a bad writer. It makes you a writer. We all default to comfortable language when we're drafting. That's what revision is for. By the end of this post, you'll know exactly which phrases to search for in your manuscript, why they're selling your prose short, and what to write instead so your fiction sounds like you. Ready? Let's go.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 10 Overused Phrases in Fiction That Are Killing Your Prose - 5. "Just" and "Really"</image:title>
      <image:caption>Alright, these are the sneaky crutch words. They seem harmless, but when you're self-editing your novel you'll find them everywhere, quietly diluting your prose. "She was just so tired" isn't as strong as "She was exhausted." "Really scared" doesn’t hit as hard as "Terrified." The fix: Most of the time, cut them completely. When you need emphasis, reach for a stronger word instead. Pro tip: Run a search for both words in your manuscript and start cutting. It's one of the fastest ways to instantly tighten your prose.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 9 Common Writing Mistakes New Fiction Writers Make - Listen up, friends! These nine mistakes could be quietly killing your great story.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I'm Leslie, and as a developmental editor and book coach, I see these come up constantly in the manuscripts I work on. These mistakes are natural, and they're easy to make when you're learning writing craft. But they're also easy to fall back into, even when you've been writing for years. So if you're doing something on this list, don't feel bad! We’ve all been here. :) The goal is just to name them, fix them, and get back to writing the story you're meant to tell.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 9 Common Writing Mistakes New Fiction Writers Make</image:title>
      <image:caption>The fix: If you're writing third-person limited, stay in one character's perspective per scene. Switch perspectives at a chapter or scene break, and signal the change clearly. If you're writing from an omniscient perspective, practice zooming out to a broader narrative view before moving into a different character's mind. It creates the transition readers need to follow you.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 9 Common Writing Mistakes New Fiction Writers Make</image:title>
      <image:caption>As Frank Herbert wrote in Dune, fear is the mind-killer. And for writers, the fear of making mistakes, overanalyzing every sentence, spiraling into self-doubt, waiting until everything feels ready, can stop a story before it ever really starts. Remember: You can improve bad writing, but you can't improve something that was never written. The first draft doesn't need to be good. Give yourself permission to write badly, to get it wrong, to leave a mess on the page that you'll clean up later. The creative phase and the editing phase are two different jobs, and trying to do both at once is one of the fastest ways to get stuck. Every writer, no matter how experienced, lives with doubt. The ones who keep going aren't the ones who stopped feeling it. They're the ones who wrote anyway.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Ernest Hemingway's Writing Routine (And What to Steal From It) - Want to write like a literary legend?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Today, we're diving into Ernest Hemingway's writing routine. We’ll learn what he actually did every day, why it worked for him, and whether any of it could work for you too. And I think it's always fun to try new things when it comes to writing. That can look like experimenting with your process, your environment, your schedule, or, in this case, borrowing elements from someone else's routine entirely and seeing what sticks. Stick around for the last tip on this list. It's one I use in my own writing, and it's my favorite way to keep momentum going. By the end of this post, you'll have four concrete elements of Hemingway's routine to experiment with. No Nobel Prize required.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Ernest Hemingway's Writing Routine (And What to Steal From It) - 2. Writing while standing</image:title>
      <image:caption>Hemingway wrote standing up, using a chest-high shelf for his typewriter. It was a deliberate choice to stay physically and mentally engaged while he worked, not just an eccentric quirk. Why it worked for him: Standing kept him alert. It prevented the slow creeping fatigue that sets in after hours in a chair, and it kept his energy moving. Why it might work for you: If you've ever hit that wall mid-writing session where your eyes go glassy, and you find yourself reading the same sentence four times, it’s worth trying. Standing naturally keeps your blood flowing and your body engaged, which tends to keep your mind engaged too. A few options if you want to experiment: A standing desk or even a high counter or bookshelf (very Hemingway of you) An under-desk treadmill, bike, or elliptical, if you want to take it further Even just getting up and pacing can increase creativity And here's a bonus: Changing your physical position can actually shift your mental state. A lot of writers find that switching how they approach writing. Whether it’s standing, pacing, or even dictating out loud, it can break through a creative block in a way that just sitting there staring at the screen won't. Hemingway Fun Fact: He rewrote the last page of A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times before he was satisfied with it. Thirty-nine!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The 5 Influence Styles That Make Characters Feel Authentic - When developing characters, most writers miss this layer entirely.</image:title>
      <image:caption>One of the most common things I notice in manuscripts is characters who don't have a clear, consistent way of influencing others. They come across as flat, inconsistent, or confusing. They say one thing in chapter two and act completely out of character by chapter seven. Readers feel the disconnect, even when they can't pinpoint exactly what's wrong. Here's what's usually missing: influence style. When you understand how your characters try to get what they want, you gain one of the most powerful tools available for making them feel grounded, distinct, and real on the page. By the end of this post, you'll know the five core influence styles, how to assign them to your characters, and how to use them to create sharper dialogue, deeper conflict, and more believable character dynamics.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - The 5 Influence Styles That Make Characters Feel Authentic - How to use influence styles in your writing</image:title>
      <image:caption>Knowing the five styles is the starting point. Here's how to actually put them to work: Give each character a primary and a secondary style. Just like real people, your characters will have a default approach. They can adapt depending on the situation. A protagonist who usually leads with logic might shift into inspiring mode when things get emotionally charged. It gives you great moments of surprise when a character steps outside their norm.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The #1 Thing Missing From Your First Chapter - A strong opening doesn't need to be flashy.</image:title>
      <image:caption>You don’t need an explosion or a chase scene or a dramatic revelation on page one. But you DO need to keep readers turning the page. There is one thing that, more than almost anything else, stops them from doing that. Take a look at your protagonist. Are they just kind of…there? Maybe they are observing, reacting, or waiting for something to happen to them. That's the number one thing missing from my clients' first chapters: the protagonist isn't taking meaningful action. Readers connect with agency. We are drawn to characters who want something, make choices, and move the story forward, even in small ways. When your protagonist is passive in the opening chapter, it makes them harder to care about, and it makes it harder for readers to feel like this is someone worth following for an entire book. By the end of this post, you'll know what meaningful action actually looks like, why agency is the heartbeat of a compelling first chapter, and how to make sure your first chapter has both.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - The #1 Thing Missing From Your First Chapter - Connect the action to a goal</image:title>
      <image:caption>Meaningful action and agency are both tied to something concrete: your protagonist's goal in the opening pages. In those first pages, your main character should be actively pursuing something. It doesn't have to be the big story-spanning goal. It doesn't have to carry through the entire plot. This is often called the initial story goal, and it's much simpler than it sounds: what does your protagonist want to accomplish in this first scene or chapter? What are they trying to get, avoid, fix, or protect? When readers can see a character with a clear short-term goal, something clicks. Readers start asking questions. Will they succeed? What's standing in the way? What does this goal tell us about who they are?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Choose a Great Book Title (With Genre Analysis) - Choosing a title can feel completely overwhelming. There are so many options, you want to get it just right, and the stakes feel high, because a great book deserves a great title.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Here's the thing: a great book title needs to be specific, interesting, and give potential readers a hint of what's inside, without giving too much away. No pressure, right? So let’s break this down step by step. The first half of this post covers the brainstorming process. The second half is something I'm genuinely nerdy-excited about: a deep dive into title patterns across fantasy, sci-fi, horror, YA fantasy, and romantasy using the 2024 Goodreads Choice Award nominees. If you love analyzing books as much as writing them, stick around for that part. <image:title>Blog - How to Choose a Great Book Title (With Genre Analysis) - Step 5: Ask for input</image:title>
      <image:caption>If you're stuck, bring in fresh eyes. Poll your friends, your critique group, or your writing community. Post a few options somewhere and let people react. Sometimes someone outside the story can immediately see what you've been too close to notice.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Choose a Great Book Title (With Genre Analysis) - What stands out:</image:title>
      <image:caption>Romantasy titles lean into relationships and destiny: A Fate Inked in Blood, Born of Blood and Salt, Apprentice to the Villain. The relationship tension is right there in the title, morally gray dynamics, forbidden connections, fated bonds. Magical imagery is everywhere too: Spell, Moon, Flame, Shadow, Phantasma. These words promise immersive, lush worlds. And elemental pairings, Flame and Shadow, Blood and Salt, show up repeatedly because they create an immediate atmosphere with just two words. Title tip for romantasy writers: Lean into fate, magic, and morally complex dynamics. Elemental pairings work really well in this genre. Think about what the central relationship tension is and whether it can live in the title itself.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - What Is Speculative Fiction? A Genre Guide for Writers - Have you heard the term speculative fiction and thought... Okay, but what does that actually mean?</image:title>
      <image:caption>You're not alone. It's one of those terms that gets thrown around a lot in writing and publishing spaces, and depending on who you ask, you'll get a slightly different answer every time. I'm Leslie. As a developmental editor and book coach for fiction, genre is genuinely one of my favorite things to dig into with writers. Figuring out where your book fits in the landscape of everything that's out there? It matters more than most people realize, and we're going to get into exactly why by the end of this post. But first: what even is speculative fiction? By the end of this post, you'll understand where the term came from, how its definition has evolved, what subgenres fall under it, and, most importantly, why any of this actually matters for the book you're writing. Let's jump in!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - What Is Speculative Fiction? A Genre Guide for Writers - That's a very different scope than Heinlein's original definition, and it's the one that's actually most useful for writers today.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The older view was about speculating the possible. The modern, broader view includes speculating the impossible, too. It's about any story that asks what if in a way that pushes beyond everyday reality, whether that's grounded in science or entirely fantastical.</image:caption>
